The Wellness Center believes in the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles through a holistic perspective that emphasizes education and prevention. The Center provides outreach services and programs to meet the needs of our campus community and advance their academic, personal, social, and psychological growth.

Please note that our outreach and trainings are for the USF St. Petersburg community. We do not provide services to community members or outside organizations, but we may make exceptions on a case by case basis. If you have any questions about whether your audience fits our scope of practice, please contact us.

PRESENTATIONS

The following presentations or programs can be requested as needed:

Alcohol Jeopardy

Health Topic: Alcohol prevention

Description: This unique Jeopardy!-style game focuses on alcohol education for USFSP students, covering a variety of topics from standard drinks to laws and policies to making good decisions.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this presentation, students will be able to:

  • Define the term BAC 
  • Describe how alcohol effects the brain
  • Name at least two ways to prevent intoxication

Facilitator: Health Educator, Wellness Center counselor, or USF H.E.A.T.

Time: 1 hour 

Audience: Any student group or classroom setting

Health Jeopardy

Topic: Various

Description: A fun and interactive game based on the popular TV Game show, Jeopardy! Students will break into groups and answer questions on a variety of college health issues. Students will learn about alcohol use, statistics, drug prevention, sexually transmitted infections, nutrition and fitness, and more! Winners will receive a special prize!

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this presentation, students will be able to:

  • Identify smoking and alcohol use as leading preventable causes of illness and death in the U.S.;
  • Describe two benefits of proper nutrition and fitness;
  • Compare and contrast good stress and bad stress.

Time: 1 hour

Audience: Any student group or classroom setting

Materials Needed: Laptop/TV with sound and internet and DVD-drive, seating, table

Embracing Your Reflection

Topic: Body image, nutrition, self-esteem

Description: This presentation helps students confront body image issues head-on through honest discussion, engaging activities, and social media. This interactive workshop dispels some common myths and misconceptions about nutrition and weight, and focuses on promoting a healthy body image vs. the ideal body image as projected by society.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this presentation, students will be able to:

  • Describe the difference between healthy vs. ideal body size;
  • Identify the aspects of body image;
  • Demonstrate support of others’ body image struggles and challenges.

Facilitator: Health Educator, Counseling Staff, or USF H.E.A.T.

Time: 1 hour

Audience: Any student group or classroom setting

Materials Needed: enough room for seating and to move around, computer, and projector

Sextastic Wheel of Knowledge

Topic: Sexual Health, Alcohol Use, Bystander Intervention

Description: A fun and interactive game where students can spin the wheel and win prizes! Students will break into groups and answer questions about college sexual health issues. Students will learn about what goes on during a male and female physical exam, sexually transmitted infection testing, statistics, how to intervene during a sexual assault, how to make healthy decisions around drug and alcohol use, and how to have safe sex.

Learning Outcomes: As the end of the presentation, students will be able to:

  • Describe at least two sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and how they are transmitted.
  • Identify at least two methods of protection from STIs and pregnancy.
  • List the steps to properly put on a condom.

Stressed Out

Topic: Mental health, stress management

Description: Stressed out?! Most college students count stress as their number one obstacle to getting good grades, having healthy relationships, sleeping, and functioning well in general. This presentation will help give you the tools to manage stress effectively by teaching you meditation and breathing techniques, time management skills, how to say no to activities and responsibilities that may overwhelm you, and more!

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this presentation, students will be able to:

  • Describe how their level of assertiveness and their ability to say no affects their stress levels
  • Explain why budgeting your time is just as important as budgeting your money
  • State how meditation and guided imagery techniques can be used as tools for stress management

"We Need to Talk": Getting What You Want from a Relationship

Topic: Communication, relationships, intimate partner violence

Description: Whether it’s your first serious relationship, just a casual encounter, or you just want to learn skills to be a better partner, this presentation will teach you active listening skills, communication techniques, and how to recognize the warning signs of an unhealthy relationship. You will learn how to set healthy boundaries and how to communicate effectively so you can have a healthier relationship. By learning how to be a better listener and communicator, the goal is to prevent sexual assault, emotional, verbal, and physical abuse, and date rape from happening among students.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this presentation, students will be able to:

  • List at least two effective communication techniques.
  • Recognize at least two warning signs of an unhealthy relationship.
  • Identify healthy boundaries within a relationship.

Facilitator: Health Educator, Victim Advocate, Counseling Staff, or USF H.E.A.T.

TRAINING WORKSHOPS

The Wellness Center is also committed to provided the following training workshops or programs for USF St. Petersburg student groups and organizations as well as faculty and staff groups or departments.  We can also provide customizable trainings to fit your specific needs. 

QPR Suicide Prevention

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, Refer and teaches participants the early warning signs of a suicide crisis and skills on how to speak with and refer people for help.

This training is available to all student, faculty and staff groups who are interested in being able to better serve the campus community. The training program can be offered to groups of anywhere from 5-25 participants. In-person trainings are limited to a 15 participant maximum and virtual trainings are limited to a 25 participant maximum. Registration must be completed at least 48 hours before the scheduled training.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this training, participants will be able to: 

  • Increase their knowledge around suicide and suicide prevention
  • Increase their comfort with intervening if needed
  • Identify warning signs of suicidal behaviors or ideation

Length Recommended: 1-2 hours depending on breadth of focus.

Report Support

Report Support is an interactive workshop that aims to expand capacity to respond to student disclosures of violence, crime, or trauma. With a strategic review of trauma informed principles and how they apply to our work, as well as a detailed review of how to support diverse student populations through voluntary and/or mandated reporting processes (i.e. Title IX), this workshop is a space to work through individual challenges and departmental processes for supporting students in need.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Increase comfort with responding to disclosures
  • Apply trauma informed response skills to disclosures
  • Increase capacity to complete reporting processes

Length Recommended: 1 - 1.5 hours

USFSP Cares: Supporting Survivors

College students typically encounter a great deal of stress during the course of their educational experience. While most students cope successfully with the demands of college life, for some the pressures can feel overwhelming and unmanageable. While there are a number of campus and community resources to assist students, they are sometimes unaware of or hesitant to utilize them. This training covers the basics of recognizing signs related to student distress and helping students find appropriate assistance.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to: 

  • Identify at least 3 warnings signs a distressed student may exhibit
  • Describe at least two ways to help using referrals and resources
  • Increase their level of comfort with intervening if necessary

Length Recommended: 1.5 hours

The Gallup Strengths philosophy centers around the belief that focusing on strengths rather than weaknesses results in more effective and meaningful professional and personal experiences. If you would like to learn more about your Top 5 Strengths, you can attend an Introduction to Strengths Workshop conducted by certified trainers at USF St. Petersburg! This one-hour training will provide you with an opportunity to explore your strengths, how you use them, and even help you create an action plan to use your strengths to their fullest potential!

This workshop will be offered throughout the semester so please sign up at your convenience and make sure you’ve taken the Strengths Finder assessment prior to the training. If you are interested in training specifically for your department, please fill out the request form. The trainers will need to receive the Top 5 Strengths from each person attending the training at least a week prior to the scheduled date.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Gain a better understanding of your top 5 strengths
  • Learn how strengths applies to team dynamics
  • Learn how to apply strengths in professional goal-setting

Length Recommended: The Introduction workshop is 1 hour. Customized team trainings can be 1-2 hours.
