Journalism at USF St. Petersburg

Embracing the world of digital communication, where everyone is both a consumer and producer of content, the Digital Communication and Multimedia Journalism program on USF’s St. Petersburg campus prepares students to excel in the digital sphere. Coursework encompasses journalistic writing, visual storytelling, technology and community engagement, alongside foundational classes in theory, law, and ethics. Students learn a range of in-demand skills including photography, reporting, video production, social media strategy, podcast production, broadcasting, visual design, data storytelling, on-camera interviewing, and online research. 

While enrolled in the Digital Communication and Multimedia Journalism program, students can contribute to collegiate news organizations such as the campus student newspaper, The Crow’s Nest, the Online News Association, and Spoon University. Enterprising students can practice civic engagement on campus and in the community through the Neighborhood News Bureau, a newsroom covering historic African American neighborhoods of St. Petersburg. 

A degree in Digital Communication and Multimedia Journalism prepares students to become savvy media consumers and creators. Grounded in the craft and values of humanistic, community-driven journalism, the program equips students with timeless writing, reporting, and storytelling skills alongside contemporary knowledge of visual and data-driven communication. Through their studies, students become skilled producers across platforms, from digital and print publications to broadcast media.

Graduates go on to work in journalism, marketing, and a range of other fields that rely on professional communicators to inform, explain, and persuade. Department alumni thrive in journalism and communication roles at renowned newsrooms, companies, and organizations such as the Tampa Bay Times, The Washington Post, Poynter Institute for Media Studies, American Heart Association, Tampa Bay Rays, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, and more.

Requirements for the major in Journalism & Digital Communication

Always refer to the Undergraduate Catalog for degree requirements. Students will normally begin progress toward the major by taking at least one course from the major core, as these often serve as prerequisites for the electives. Students are urged to consult with the Digital Communication and Multimedia Journalism advisor to create the most beneficial plan of study.
