DIGITAL JOURNALISM AND DESIGN AT USF ST. PETERSBURG

digital journalism

The master’s in Digital Journalism and Design on USF’s St. Petersburg campus prepares students to excel in the fast-paced world of digital communication. Coursework encompasses classes in reporting, ethics and law with technical expertise in a host of multimedia channels. An emphasis is placed on the Creative Cloud, with classes across the curriculum that focus on InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere, Photoshop and After Effects. Students learn essential skills in storytelling, web publishing and design, social media and information graphics to become skilled producers across platforms, from digital and print publications to broadcast media.

An essential part of the program is a culminating multimedia project. Students showcase skills developed via detailed websites, long-form videos, podcast series or social media ad campaigns. Past projects have included a website on scuba diving locations in Florida and in-depth multimedia storytelling on homelessness and housing insecurity. A thesis option is also available to those students hoping to pursue a PhD in the field.

The master’s degree is designed to be completed in one year and prepares students for careers in print, electronic and digital media production and publication, and provides a foundation for those students who elect to continue their studies at the Ph.D. level or teach at the post-secondary level. Graduates go on to work in a range of fields that rely on professional communicators to inform, explain and persuade.
