Marine Biology

Undergraduate Major

Marine biology is the study of organisms found in the world’s oceans and the environment in which they live. The Marine Biology program provides students with a well-rounded degree that will improve their knowledge about life in the oceans as well as their communication, research and critical thinking skills, which are invaluable to the field.

MARINE BIOLOGY AT USF ST. PETERSBURG

The St. Petersburg campus offer a wide variety of marine biology courses from examining invertebrates and vertebrates at the organismal level to marine ecology and examining faunal interactions within the various ecosystems of the ocean. Students have the opportunity to explore various areas in marine biology that they may want to pursue at the graduate level or in the workforce.

Students have multiple opportunities for marine-related research, working with professors in the field and in a laboratory setting on campus,as well as internships through partnerships with local and regional marine science-based organizations such as the Florida Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI), the U.S.Geological Survey (USGS), the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), The Florida Aquarium, and others. Close physical proximity to the USF College of Marine Science (CMS) allows students the opportunity to interact with Oceanography professors as they pursue their undergraduate degree through courses taught by graduate faculty as well as working on various marine-related projects at CMS.

The faculty involved in the Marine Biology major have a variety of marine-related backgrounds and active research programs which provide students different perspectives and elective offerings as they move through their degree. Small class sizes form strong connections between students and faculty and allow for multiple opportunities to work in lab settings.

Past graduates have gone on to pursue graduate degrees in Marine Science, Marine Conservation, and related biological degrees, as well as secure employment in state, federal, and international marine-related organizations.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MAJOR IN MARINE BIOLOGY
