Students and Community
Center for Civic Engagement makes USF’s St. Petersburg campus distinctive in its commitment to civic and community engagement through the development of the “Citizen Scholar” program, which combines concepts learned in the classroom into the local community.
- Maintaining a Community Partner and Service Learning Placement Directory and Citizen Scholar Course Catalog with hundreds of courses where students engage with community businesses, organizations, and social service agencies. Here is a list of some of them.
- Coordinating student internship programs in Tampa Bay, Tallahassee, and Washington.
- Hosting a Civic Engagement Fair every semester, which invites our community partners to campus to table at the event. Faculty, staff, and students can connect with internship and volunteer opportunities.
- Awarding the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Civic Engagement to students and student organizations, who are honored at the annual Rocky's Awards.
USF St. Petersburg Career Center. There are a variety of ways for companies and organizations to recruit talented students for employment, internships and other work experiences. These opportunities help students gain relevant experience while meeting the organization’s needs. The Career Center hosts career and job fairs and events, has posting boards, and employer relations, the USF St. Petersburg Career Center engages meaningful career connections for employers, alumni and current students.
Innovation Scholars. The Innovation Scholars Career Exploration Program provides unique job shadowing opportunities for incoming high-achieving first-year students at USF St. Petersburg by partnering them with companies and professionals in and around Downtown St. Petersburg and within the St. Petersburg Innovation District. This program will provide students an introduction to one or more industries or job fields as they shadow mentors and test career options to help solidify major choices and academic paths early in their university experience.
Student Life organizes myriad events for students to participate in community including USF Day at the Capitol, the MLK Day Parade and Breakfast, an annual Diversity and Inclusion Conference and more.
USF Health Buddies pairs students with senior citizens to help reduce preventable hospital readmissions for individuals living with chronic conditions through combined in-home/telephone interventions that empower them to self-manage their health.
