Meet the Composter
The amount of waste a campus can generate, along with the unique challenges of being located in a very urban environment, calls for a particularly robust composting system.
After reviewing dozens of possibilities, one was finally chosen: the Intermodal Earth Flow (EF IM20) produced by Green Mountain Technology. It is created from a recycled shipping container, outfitted with a self-contained composting unit that self turns its contents and regulates internal temperature.
This unit can handle waste that is too difficult to manage with a home composting system, assisting with the waste diversion on campus.
Fast facts
The composting unit can:
- Produce about 20 cubic yards of compost after 21 days
- Digest materials such as meats, dairy, sugar, and fats
- Contains a bio filter to eliminate odors
- Has a state-of-the-art computerized data tracking system
- Is green -- in color and in practice!
